An industrial visit is an opportunity for the students to understand the practical application of their syllabus. Also as it comes close on the heels of the semester exams it gives the students good way to unwind. Keeping this in mind IEEE-CRCE organizes an IV for its members annually. This year the visit was to Chandigarh – Shimla.
On 10th January,2009 , 73 students from 2nd and 3rd year descended on Bandra Terminus to begin this years' industrial visit. The students were accompanied by two professors Mr. Ajay Koli and Ms. Parshvi Shah. There was great anticipation as the Paschim Express departed the station marking the beginning of what eventually turned out to be a wonderful trip.
After a tiring but fun journey of 30 Hrs the students finally reached their destination Chandigarh just as the sun was descending on the horizon. The group reached their hotel Pearl Inn admiring the 1st planned city of India on the way. The next day 12th Jan, thick fog delayed the departure to Shimla by couple of hours. On route to Shimla the group stopped at Timber Trail resorts which has a 2.5 km long rope way. They enjoyed the trip on the rope way and the resort at the top of the hill. The students reached the erstwhile summer capital of India at night and were greatful for the warmth offered by Hotel Ashiana Regency the group’s abode.
The morning of 13th January was crisp and the drive to Kufri ,the group’s next destination, was delightful. The horse ride from the parking lot to the peak was pleasurable. Though the promised snow at the peak never came the breathtaking views more than made up for the disappointment. The evening was spent by the students enjoying the sites and sounds of Shimla which included the Mall road, the Ridge, Christ Church amongst others.
14th January marked the beginning of the industry visits. After a longish drive the students reached Baddi where Penguin Electronics is based. It is a company that makes food processors for Philips. Here Mr Atul Gupta,Manager, showed the students how the assembly line works, the various divisions within the line. The testing procedures as well as the nitty- gritty of working in an industrial set up was an revelation for the students. Mr Jagdeep Singh explained the organizational working of Philips right from its R&D centres to its manufacturing centres which can churn out upto 2000 units a day. The evening was spend at Pinjore gardens which are a replica of the Mughal Gardens.
On 15th January the students visited Godrej and Boyce facility at Mohali. The facility includes two factories one of which manufactures refrigerators and the other which makes compressors. The visit began with a presentation on the company itself followed by a briefing on how the refrigerator works. Fresh from the talk the students went to factory floor where the assembly line was awe inspiring. Mr Vijendra Singh enthusiastically explained the process involved in the manufacture, right from the basic tooling to the moulding stage and finally the testing and quality control. The process of moulding was a sight to behold. Then Mr Rajneesh guided us through the production of compressors explaining its various parts like body , shaft etc. After the visit the students visited the city of Chandigarh and its various land marks like Rock garden, Sukhna lake, Rose Garden and some shopping in Sector -17.
16th January was the last day of the visit. The students visited Elin Appliances at Nalagarh. This is a company that makes torches for Everready as well as iron, mixer, grinder for Philips. The students were taken for a guided tour of the manufacturing, final testing and quality control that goes into the making of torches. Then the group were explained the manufacturing of iron and mixer – grinder done for Philips by this company. It was interesting to note the human element that goes into the making of these articles. After the visit, the group went to Ambala from where the train for Mumbai was to depart.
The train journey symbolized the end of what had been a thoroughly enjoyable as well as an interesting learning experience for the students.

No. of participants:   51 teams
Report:
Robo Trek was an event where participants had to navigate their remote-controlled cars through a track which had different terrains, bridges and obstacles. The track was constructed using wooden planks within 3 days. At the end, it proved to be very challenging and was liked by most of the people. On Day 1 of Crescendo, we had 7 teams coming. There was lot of enthusiasm and a large crowd soon gathered to watch the cars in action. On Day 2, we had more teams coming. The total number of teams at the end of Round 1 was 10. Out of these teams, the fastest 5 were selected for Round 2. This round required the car to navigate the track and then go through a maze that was made out of bricks. We finally had a winner at the end of the day who completed the track in just 2mins 24secs! He was awarded a Rs.1000 cash prize, Rs.1000 worth of Spykar clothing vouchers and a Microsoft book worth Rs.700. There were only ten teams that participated compared to over 25 teams last year, which we feel is due to the lack of robotic events. Last year there were 4 robotic events which were a crowd puller. This year other colleges had upto 15 robotic competitions and unfortunately coincided with Crescendo due to which we got less participation.
